British colonial rule in India served as a blueprint for modern colonial regimes all over the world. The confident self-representation of its politicians and administrators, the effective economic exploitation of the domain, and Victorian imperial culture influenced colonial policies of numerous European elites. Likewise, the intellectual opposition to British rule was exemplary for many nationalist and anti-colonial movements. Political and academic debates on the (post-) colonial condition were thoroughly shaped by intellectuals from India. The course will examine major contributions and debates on the colonial history of India from the 1850s to the 1940s. It will serve as an introduction to colonial theory and history. In comparing British rule in India to other forms of colonial rule, it will also point at variances between different types of colonial regimes, questioning the viability of generalizations about "colonialism".
