SoSe 13: Discovering Canada and Québec

Frauke Brammer , Christian Lammert

Comments

The Canadian government's recent abolishment of the cultural diplomacy program in worldwide support of Canadian Studies has provoked a serious debate about the status and future of Canadian Studies in general, and its role in the context of (North) American Studies in particular. Taking this as a starting point, the purpose of this interdisciplinary class is twofold: First, the seminar will provide students in North American Studies with a survey of major historiographic issues and political debates in contemporary Canadian societies, from questions of French and British colonialism, settler imperialism, Anti-Americanism and the role and resilience of Aboriginal Peoples to Canadian specificities of nationalism, Québec separatism, regionalism, bilingualism, and multiculturalism. Second, we will address the genesis and current status of Canadian (and Québec) Studies from an interdisciplinary angle, with a focus on political science and history. Over the course of the seminar, three eminent historians will share their insights with us: Prof. Steve Hewitt, current president of the British Association for Canadian Studies (BACS), will be heading over from Birmingham on May 30 to speak to us about the current status of Canadian Studies; a week later (June 6), Prof. Dirk Hoerder, former president of the Association for Canadian Studies in German-speaking Countries (GKS) and leading scholar in migration history, will share his thoughts on the development of Canadian historiographic scholarship with us. On June 14-15, we have set up a joint workshop on Canadian environmental issues, the country's resource-based economy, and environmental politics, for which we will be welcoming students from the Amerika-Institut of the LMU Munich as well as Dr. Nadine Klopfer and Canadian environmental historian John Sandlos (Memorial University/Rachel Carson Centre). Prof. Sandlos will speak about his seminal work on "Abandoned Mines in Northern Canada." The class will then end with a wrap-up session on June 20. close
