SoSe 13: Radio Broadcasting in Canada and the US

Maria-Michaela Hampf

Comments

When radio hit North American homes early in the 20th century, the world was never to be the same again. This "Aufbaukurs" will approach radio history from various perspectives. Radically different from the medium's early history in Europe, radio in the US was to be paid for by commercial enterprises in order to ensure freedom of speech. Noncommercial stations were quickly marginalized and radio saw its golden days between the 1920s and its replacement as the dominant home entertainment medium in the 1950s and 60s. In its early days, radio featured genres and formats popular in other forms of American entertainment-adventure, comedy, drama, (in the beginning presented almost exclusively live and often in costume) horror, mystery, musical variety, romance, thrillers - along with classical music concerts, big band remotes, farm reports, news and commentary, panel discussions, quiz shows, sports broadcasts, talent shows and weather forecasts. Soap operas, or daytime serials may well survive the medium radio as we know it. The seminar will also compare the histories of regulation in Canada and the US, from the contentious Canadian Content (Cancon) requirements to the equally controversial Fairness Doctrine in the US. This "Aufbaukurs" will also cover disciplinary methods, analytic instruments and different approaches to writing North American history. close
