SoSe 13: The Social Structure of European Societies

This course is designed to present an overview of similarities and differences in the social structure of EU countries. The focus will be on contemporary social structures within national societies. However, given the longevity of social cleavages, each lecture also gives a short account of long-term historical developments and of supranational decisions on the EU level.
The course is structured into three major blocks: The introductory block starts with an intense discussion of major concepts of social stratification. A selection of classical and modern approaches will be presented and discussed in class. The second block focuses on selected dimensions of the social structure, such as demographic development, household and family structures, educational systems, or the structure of the labour force. The third block presents empirical evidence of the most salient forms of social inequality inherent within and between European societies, such as class inequalities, gender inequalities, or ethnic inequalities. The last session in the semester is devoted to a short synoptic overview and to inform about the types of questions contained in the written exam.
The course is designed as a lecture, but students are expected to prepare actively for each class by reading the assigned literature and by raising challenging questions to the literature.
