SoSe 14: American Economic History: Introduction

This course will give students an introduction to American economic history from colonial times to the late 20th century, aiming at a better understanding of what turned the former British colony into a modern industrialized country. Issues to be discussed will be for example the colonial economy, US economic development in comparative context, slavery as an economic system, industrialization and railroads, the financial system and the Gold Standard, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression and the New Deal, post-World War II economic performance and social change, and the origins of the financial crisis of 2007/2008. Throughout the seminar we will aim to apply economic reasoning to historical questions using empirical approaches whenever possible. The main textbook will be Walton and Rockoff, History of the American Economy. The seminar will be taught in English. Coursework includes a final exam (60 min) and response papers.
