SoSe 14: S-Surveying English Literatures II: Archeologies of the English Soil

André Otto

Comments

After World War II, the second half of the 20th century does not only see a new or renewed poetical interest in the experiences and activities of everyday life, but also a strong focus on the rural areas of Great Britain as spaces that concentrate, preserve or even embody national identity. In this context, the soil becomes a powerful foundational metaphor and the site of an archaeological exploration of the different historical layers on which the sense of place is founded. At the same time, though, the raw materiality of the soil represents a particular challenge as to how it might be represented in language. Looking at a number of poets, including authors such as Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes, Geoffrey Hill, Tony Harrison or Eavan Boland, this course will focus particularly on the intersection between discourses of personal and national identity and the semiotic construction of space/place in poetry. Apart from providing an introduction to different poetological projects of the last 60 years, this course will therefore place particular emphasis on various theoretical approaches to space and place. Requirements for active participation will be response papers and a presentation in class. close
