SoSe 14: Global History and Human Rights in the Modern Age

Alexandra Przyrembel

Comments

The history of human rights is currently facing a boom. While most of the literature identifies the 1970s as a turning point in the politics of human rights, this seminar will trace legal discourses, the role of the state, humanitarian strategies, and public debates back to the 18th century. By focusing particularly on social movements (like the abolitionists or Amnesty International) which fought for human rights in different historical contexts, this seminar aims at understanding the complex and diverse meaning of human rights in the Modern Age.
