SoSe 15: S Levels of Linguistic Analysis II: Phonetics and Phonology

In this course you will become familiar with the basics of English phonetics and phonology - the scientific study of speech sounds. While phonetics is concerned with how sounds are produced, transmitted and perceived, phonology is concerned with the function of sounds and their relation to each other within a system. While phonetics works as a descriptive tool concerning the actual physical sound events, phonology deals with the "ideas" behind the sounds, the categories that we build in our heads that make language even possible. Phonetics and phonology is therefore a good field to become aware of the concrete as well as the abstract nature of language.
We will first talk about speech production: What is happening inside the mouth when we produce certain sounds? How are speech sounds distinguished? Can speech be measured? What does speech look like when it is made visible?
We will then look into the field of transcription and get to know the IPA - the International Phonetic Alphabet - which is used to notate the actual pronunciation of words, as regular spelling is often misleading.
Subsequently, we will deal with the basic concepts of phonology and its function within the study of language.
