SoSe 15: S-Sociolinguistics and Varieties of English II

Ferdinand von Mengden / Kirsten Middeke

Kommentar

English is a language that is spoken all over the world. There are about sixty independent states in which English is either an official language or de facto used as one. English serves as a language of communication in the most important governmental and non-governmental international organisations. English is used in many non-official contexts as a lingua franca. An estimated 1 to 1.5 billion people use English regularly. One common observation is that the success of English as a world language constitutes a threat to smaller and more local language communities. An opposing (but less widespread) view is that the spread of English forces the language to diversify ever more. Local linguistic practices and identities are then encoded by local Englishes whose connection to other varieties of English decay more and more. We will look at the various aspects of the globalization of English that are involved in these scenarios. The spread and diversification of English will be treated with respect to its cultural and social facets as well as regarding change and variation of the linguistic system. Schein requirements are an essay, a short oral presentation in class as well as regular and active participation. The seminar starts in the first week of term. Students who are interested in the class, but cannot come in the first week, are kindly asked to notify me via email before the start of the lecture period. Schließen
