Postcolonial literature is often described as being 'written from the margins'. But talk of the 'margin' presupposes and thereby inadvertently supports the very notion of centrality it set out to criticise. In this course we will be considering questions of marginality and centrality, of disenfranchisement and agency, of diaspora and home. The three novels we will be reading are strikingly 'central' to the canon of English literature - not only in having won prestigious literary awards.
