Comments

The course will give an overview on the architecture and urban landscape of Assyrian cities from the second half of second millennium to the fall of the Neo-Assyrian empire at the end of the 7th century BC. In addition to the analysis of individual buildings and their reciprocal settlement in a synchronic/diachronic perspective, the course will investigate the sources of Assyrian architecture (buildings, texts, images). A special focus will be placed on: 1) the city of Ashur in the second millennium from old buildings to new monuments; 2) the architecture present in the Middle-Assyrian provinces and the question of "Assyrian features" abroad; 3) the Neo-Assyrian capitals: urban settlement, religious architecture and palaces; 4) archaeological and textual sources for the building activities of the king; 5) the Assyrian images of architecture: a reliable source? The course aims at exploring Assyrian architecture according to typology, function, and chronology as well as a critical perspective on the interpretation of its different sources. close
