The subject of the Seminar is the poet 'Umar ibn Abi Rabi'a (d. ca 712) and his ghazal poetry, which reflects the fundamental social changes of the first century of Islam. The analysis of the texts will be primarily concerned with the poet's individuality and the question of gender in the urban society of the Hijaz.
