Alchemy (Arabic al-kiimiya´), the art of producing silver and gold, was very popular not only in the Islamic Middle Ages, but up till the 19th and early 20th centuries. Alchemy should not be considered as a technique for the transmutation of vile metals only, but also as a kind of "Weltanschauung". Alchemical works are composed in a wide array of genres, including allegorical narratives and myths, visions, and poems. Many alchemical writings are pseudepigraphs and attributed to famous persons (e.g. Platon, Mary the Copt, or Ibn Wahshiyya).
This seminar will present key concept of Arabic alchemy and participants will read and discuss Arabic texts on the subject.
