SoSe 15: MÜ-Negotiating Gender: Constructions, Representations, Theories: Performance and Performativity

The tutorial will offer an introduction to theories of performativity, which, over the last two decades, have become very influential in Gender Studies, Literary Studies, Linguistics and Cultural Studies alike. We will clarify the concept of "performativity" and distinguish it from phenomena such as performance, ritual, play-acting etc.; trace the history of performativity studies, and discuss major contributions to the debate by, among others, J. L. Austin, Judith Butler, Jacques Derrida and Victor Turner. We will compare their approaches and assess their relevance for English Studies.
Assessment will be on the basis of regular attendance and active participation in classroom activities.
