Kommentar

At the death of Alexander of Macedon, his son Alexander IV reigned shortly and, after his assassination, the empire was divided between the generals of his father. Ptolemy son of Lagos installed himself in Egypt and founded a dynasty that would last three centuries. The profound modifications that Greek rule introduced in Egypt were softened by a deliberate cultural policy of syncretism and assimilation: the Ptolemaic kings adopted ancient Egyptian customs and the cult of Serapis was established. At the same time, the early Ptolemaic kings made Alexandria - the new city founded by Alexander himself during his short visit to Egypt - the political and cultural capital of the Greek Mediterranean. The Methodenübung will go through literary, documentary, and archaeological sources to discuss the characteristics, anomalies and peculiarities of Egypt during the Hellenistic period. See "Learning Objectives" for more details. Schließen
