This series of lectures will take you on a mental journey through the literary landscapes of medieval English poetry. We will travel through the wilderness and cultured nature of the medieval world and the landscapes of the afterlife, spaces depicted in such well-known works as Geoffrey Chaucer’s Book of the Duchess and The Parlement of Fowls, The Kingis Quair and Pearl. By doing so, we will explore the ecocentric and anthropocentric aspects of the poems as well as the ways in which “the literature of the past might illuminate our own ecological concerns” (John Parham, “Editorial”, Green Letters 11 (2009), 4).
