SoSe 16: Vertiefungsmodul: Introduction to Japanese Economy and Industries

This course will guide students to contemporary Japan, viewed from its economy and industries. The lecture will start from describing the lifestyles and living standards of current Japanese citizens and how they have changed since before World War II. It will be followed by a review of post-WWII development of the Japanese economy, focusing on some major events, such as the high-growth period and industrial policy, the “oil shock” and subsequent economic transformation, the “bubble economy” and its aftermath, and recent monetary policy. The latter half of the course will be devoted to the analyses of three industries, namely the automobile, electronics, and animation (anime) industries. Their industrial structures, including the relationship between big companies and small and medium-sized enterprises, their successes and shortcomings will be described. All students who are interested in Japan are welcome to the class. close
