This course examines the practice of aesthetic Orientalism, which can be roughly defined as the representation of the Middle East (and other non-Western cultures) through essentialized forms that indicate otherness to a presumed Western identity. The course will take a critical approach to the engagement with "Orientalism" fostered through the development of post-colonial studies in the 1980s-1990s, and will consider what models of representational othering inform contemporary practices of representation of and within the Middle East. It will ask to what extent the model of Orientalism retains its validity, and to what extent new models of representation reflect contemporary political and social orders. close
