SoSe 17: Revolutionary Political Philosophy

Craig Schamel

Kommentar

Beyond particular philosophies which have been politically and socially revolutionary (e.g. the thought of die Freidenker, Jacobinism, anarchism, Marxism, syndicalism, radical feminism, queer radicalism) a commonality and a unitary and valuable body of thought which can be called revolutionary can be discerned within political philosophy. A history of revolutionary thought in modern philosophy, which is evidenced in writings by Renaissance humanists, early modern scientific philosophers, and by the Diggers of the English Revolution, but which becomes deeper and more prominent with Rousseau, is presented and considered. Thematic questions will include the question of the relationship between political philosophy and political action; the role of the theorist and the role of political philosophy in political and social revolutions; the constitution of counterrevolutionary thought and its relationship to conservatism; the question of how Revolutionism can be understood as a Hegelian "moment" or aspect of a historical process; and the question of what a revolutionary state or society is and what its relationship is to liberal democracy. These questions are explored through readings such as the writings of Rousseau, the speeches of the French Revolutionaries, the writings of Kant, Toussaint L'Ouverture, Hegel, Bettina von Armin, Dorothea Schlegel, Fourier, Marx, Kropotkin, Marcuse, and Jill Johnston, and through related lectures and class discussions.
