Kommentar

Societal discourses on (current) social and political issues often meet the characteristics of moral discourses. Actors both strategically as well as unconsciously use morally charged arguments to strengthen their standpoints and articulate their interests in public debates. This seminar aims at investigating morally charged public discourses. Theoretically, we will refer to moral foundation theory (Haidt, 2001; Graham, Haidt, & Nossek, 2009) and its application in communication research.

In the first part of the course we will discuss the basics of moral foundation theory and its application both in political science and communication research in particular. In the second part of the course participants will work on their own research projects to develop an empirical project (most likely a content analysis) to use MFT to study a morally charged public debate of their choice.

This course is designed as a research seminar. Participants are expected to regularly attend the seminar and they are required to conduct a self-administered project in research teams. Course language is English. Schließen
