SoSe 17: (Vs) Figures of Jews

In virtually every chapter of the history of Western thought, notions of the good, the national, religious and cultural self, the tolerable and the excluded, were transmitted through figures of Jews. These figures were not always deployed with equal intensity, nor were “the Jews” the one and only crucial image to be used – yet never did Jews breath the privilege of an absent image, a being that is not always already signified. In contemporary Germany in particular, figures of Jews played a pivotal role in the making of a new and civilized national self. Following the fall of the Berlin wall, Germany was no longer marked by the past, the war, the Holocaust and instead of being a mere “booster-territory” against the threats of the cold war, the country became a main player in the midst of unified Europe. Eager to demonstrate that it had indeed overcome its past, a “return of Jews” and/or the “flourishing of Jewish life” emerged as powerful narratives, through which the state’s civilizational fitness could be proven. In this course, we will read texts of David Nirenberg, Gil Anidjar, Daniel Boyarin, Alain Badiou, Sander Gilman and others to think about the (dis-)continuity of Jewish figures in contemporary Germany.
