SoSe 17: PS-Historical Linguistics: The Spread of English across the Globe

In this seminar, we will trace the history of English throughout the course of history. We will see that, at every stage in its development, English presents itself not as a fixed language, but as varied and constantly evolving. Our focus will be on the spread of English across the globe. We will follow the development of what we call the English language from the language spoken by invading Germanic tribes on the British Isles to its diversification into many (national) varieties spoken around the world.
You will be asked to collaborate with others students on a course project and write a term paper. The course will be taught in English (level C1).
