SoSe 17: Childhood, Adolescence and Youth in Southeast Asia

Contemporary anthropologies of childhood, youth and adolescence define children and youth as social actors in their own right. They seek to document their perspectives on, and participation in, their social, cultural and political environments. Since children and youth experience their ‘life stages’ differently in different local contexts, this course discusses whether childhood, adolescence or youth should be seen as a cultural universal. We will (close-)read contemporary ethnographies of childhood, youth and adolescence in relation to current theories from anthropology, pedagogy, developmental and cultural psychology. close
