Systembiology and systems-pharmacology is a new field that aims to bridge our limited understanding of how molecular processes in cells are affected by pharmaceutic treatment, how this in turn should affect medical treatment plans and how pharmaceutical strategies can be used at the epidemiological scale to prevent disease spread. Within the course we will adress the aforementioned interplay by mathematical modelling. We will initially impart the essentials of various modelleing approachesm which will be implemented in concrete case studies in one of the following areas:

  •     Pharmacokinetic Modelling
  •     Disease models and modelling of therapeutic modes of action
  •     Methods for therapy planning
  •     Parameter estimation/inference
  •     Modelling of epidemiologic processes on networks
  •     Stochastic modelling- and simulation

Goals:

After visiting the course the student will know how to adress a problem in the area of systems biology /-pharmacology on his/her own (see above), to come up with a method to adress the problem and to implement it. The student will learn to present the material in a meaningful way, i.e. a) the solution approach and b) the implemented solution.

Requirements for course fulfillment:

Project work of a thematic complex with an oral presentation of the material. The possibility of a thematic follow up in the context of a project work ("Projektarbeit") will be given.

Perspectives:

Additional courses in the area of systems biology/-pharmacology and epidemiology mit a possibility of a final thesis in different research areas.

Solid basics in mathematics (Numerics, Statistics) und biochemistry/medicine. Programming knowledge. Sucessful completion of the lecture "Numerics for Bioinformaticians" (von Kleist/Sunkara, WS 16/17).
