Comments

In early Abbasid ghazal poetry the tradition of Umayyad love poetry is continued, but the fiction of its beduin environment is abandoned. Abbasid poets refer to their urban evironment in a realistic way, and adapt the Umayyad concept of love to its new social and aesthetic requirements by giving it a courtly flavour. The most original poet of courtly love is ÝAbbÁs ibn al-AÎnaf (d. 188/803 or after 193/809). His verses and his concept of love influenced the mystical poetry of al-Halladsch and had its impact on Andalusian poetry and possibly on the poetry of the Troubadours. In the seminar selected texts of his diwan will be interpreted and the concept of „courtly love“ and ist relevance in classical Arabic literature will be analysed. close
