SoSe 17: Digital Media in Civic and Political Participation

Martin Emmer

Comments

Internet and digital media have expanded our options for communication, interaction and participation in society to a large extent. However, the emergence of these new media alone has not changed everything to the better, neither in developed and democratic countries nor in developing or transformation societies. More important than just access to these technologies is the way people use and apply them in various social contexts. In the seminar, we will first discuss various concepts of civic and political engagement and the state of research on the participatory potentials of digital media. This discussion aims on identifying important factors that have an impact on how and for what ends people do use digital media for civic and political participation. In the second part of the seminar, students will do research on best practice examples of policies, projects or research that deals with fostering the integration of citizens in social and political processes by means of digital media. The cases can be for example certain national government programs, grassroots movements or technical innovations like particular apps. These cases will be analysed according to the theoretical dimensions developed earlier in the seminar with the aim of understanding the goals and underlying concepts of participation and evaluating them in terms of their potential of successfully mobilizing citizens. The findings will be documented in a term paper at the end of the seminar. close
