Kommentar

This seminar is intended to review and build on top of the materials discussed from the previous orientation module semester. Although “Introduction to Sociology” course is not required, the students who have not yet taken the course are expected to familiarize themselves with the materials and class discussion topics of the last semester. The course is designed with four main themes concerning American society and culture: 1) Early American sociology; 2) Recent development of sociology; 3) Sociology of culture; 4) Case study and application of theoretical tools discussed during the first part of the lecture. 1) Early American sociology: this will be an extended three-part session from the brief introduction we had last semester. With a session dedicated on Jane Addams and social work in American society, it will be a mix of review and covering new topics of early American sociology we quickly skimmed over. We will also study the works and legacy of Georg Simmel. 2) Recent development of sociology over the years: reviewing European sociological theories of Durkheim, Weber, and Marx, second part of the semester will study how Sociology grew as an important academic discipline in America over the years. New focus on Parsons and Structural Functionalism will be introduced. 3) Sociology of Culture: this section will cover various approaches in studying culture from a sociological perspective. Main assignments will be readings by Pierre Bourdieu and sections from Cultural Sociology (Spillman 2002). 4) Case study: starting with Thorstein Veblen’s The Theory of the Leisure Class, this section will deal with specific topics such as class, media, race, modernization and globalization in American society and culture. Each week will start with a group presentation, followed by class discussion on the readings and theoretical approaches used to study these sociocultural phenomenons. Schließen
