SoSe 18: Reconstructing Reconstruction - The Many Histories of an Era

“The slave went free; stood a brief moment in the sun; then moved back again towards slavery.” This is W.E.B. Du Bois’ classic summary of an era in American history that has been highly debated in popular memory as well as in historiography. The period following the Civil War– the Reconstruction era – is going to be the central point of reference of this class. While the seminar is going to introduce students to the key events of the period we are mainly going to focus on the many scholarly and popular histories that have been written about the Reconstruction since the late 19th century up until today. In doing so the class does not only highlight the historiographical debates specific to this era but seeks to tease out broader methodological questions in the writing of history, including periodization, multi-perspectivity, and objectivity. In the course of the semester students will be familiarized with the situatedness and politics of historical writing as well as different approaches to understand the past. Schließen
