Learning Environment and Group

This course is meant to be an interactive workshop with a diverse group of participants. Half of the group will be regular degree-seeking students; the other half will be made of international exchange students from various countries.

Course Description

Our societies are constantly becoming more diverse. Whether at home or abroad, whether in our spare time or in professional situations, there are many occasions when we meet people from different parts of the world. Most often, those people show values, expectations and attitudes different from ours. Such diversity makes intercultural encounters interesting and enriching, but may, on the other hand, easily result in irritations, misunderstandings, and even conflict.

In this workshop we wish to train our intercultural sensitivity. We will experience how our own culture shapes our assumptions, perceptions and judgments, and how the world may look different from another culture’s eyes. We will look at different ideas about individual liberties and societal obligations, at different attitudes towards rules and time, at different communication styles, and at other diverging values.

The goal of this workshop is to develop skills and strategies that help us deal with cultural diversity, to prevent misunderstandings in unfamiliar situations, to deal with conflict in intercultural encounters and to master intercultural interactions with sensitivity and confidence.

Teaching Methods:
This course is a professional skills course. We will discuss the explanatory power of theoretical models from cultural anthropology and social psychology and we will apply them to our own intercultural experiences. However, we are not going to discuss research methods, work with empirical data, or develop own research projects.

Our focus will rather be on problem-based and experiential learning. Teaching methods will be highly interactive with group discussions, group presentations, role plays, case simulations, and other forms of games and exercises.
