SoSe 18: Micropolitics of transitions to renewable energy

The seminar takes a close look at the local scale of the many transitions to renewable energy. We analyse case studies from around the world to understand similarities and differences in the social and political contexts of introducing renewable energy systems like wind-turbines, solar panels and biogas. We will compare rural and urban approaches, private as well as public property.
Our research questions for this seminar will be, what factors foster or hinder the transition in different regions and nation states, and how, in some cases, the mere technological transition has to be part of a process that might be described as democratic empowerment.
We will read mainly articles in English; German and other languages are optional. The seminar language is English, active participation in small groups and at least one presentation are expected.
