SoSe 18: Regional Governance: Europe and Latin America compared

Regionalism - cooperation and integration at the regional level - has become an increasingly busy field of scholarly research, above all, perhaps, because more and more regional organizations emerge all over the world and claim a role in politics and policy. While EU Studies has long established itself as a distinct field of study focusing on the case of European integration, scholars in the field of comparative regionalism criticize its Europe-centric view. In order to 'de-center Europe', they advocate a look beyond one region and promote systematic comparisons among regions as to their similarities and differences.
In this course, we engage in the comparison of regionalism and regional governance in Europe and Latin America. In the beginning, we discuss some fundamental questions: What are regions, regionalism, and regional governance? How does regionalism in Latin America and Europe look like? We then turn to the drivers of regionalism, institutional structures of regional organizations, and internal effects of regionalism. With these general impressions in mind, we analyze regional cooperation and integration in selected policy fields. Finally, we use the last sessions to discuss the relations between European and Latin American regional organizations.
