SoSe 18: South-African Literature

The course discusses South African literature in a historical perspective. It focuses on literature in the English language that was written during and after the legally enforced system of racial segregation that is commonly known as apartheid. The course wants to interrogate the relation between literature and history: it seeks to develop a better understanding of how historically specific socio-political concerns inform literature and vice versa. As always, we will consider not just ideas but also the specific forms of different texts to understand how literature addresses questions of identity, power and politics. We will study works by J. M. Coetzee, Nadine Gordimer, Lewis Nkosi, Oswald Mshtali, Zakes Mda, Njabulo Ndebele, Alan Paton and other writers. close
