SoSe 19: (GEND) And justice for @ll: Digital Strategies in Inclusion Politics

Jennifer Ailed Chan de Avila

Kommentar

Although the implementation of Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) strategies as an advantage for innovation, productivity, marketing or effectiveness in organizations has been argued from an organisational literature and management perspective, the potential impact of D&I strategies on processes of digitalisation has not yet played a central role in the discussion At the same time, the possible relation between the “digital turn” and an increase on social justice and equality has not been analysed in depth from the perspective of the social sciences and the political practice. To address this lacuna, the course first explores different theoretical approaches to social inclusion from a multidisciplinary social science perspective and critically engages with the diversity paradigm as a tool to reach social inclusion and equality. This section provides an analytical and theoretical framework that includes contributions of the gender, postcolonial and critical race studies and combines them in an intersectional approach. Subsequently, we revise the literature about “digital diversity and inclusion” in the digital space. This section of the course focuses on the critical assessment of the possibilities and challenges that the digital turn poses as a driving force for equal representation and participation both in digital and analog spaces and puts into question the supposed neutrality of the digital sphere in terms of a variety of categories of difference such as gender, race and class. The seminar is conceived as a hands-on experience for the students, in which they will engage with and critically analyse concrete examples of digital tools and initiatives that look to contribute to social inclusion in different areas of society (political sphere; education, science & technology; civil society, etc.). As a special treat, the course will receive constant valuable inputs and contributions from Dr. Sabina García Peter, digitalisation expert of the Margherita von Brentano Center for Gender Studies at Freie Universität Berlin.
