SoSe 19: Development of the American Economy

This course will cover the recent economic history of the United States, from the New Deal to the 1990s. Topics to be covered will include the role of fiscal policy in the 1930s, the Fair Labor Standards Act, wartime production, African American socioeconomic progress, postwar economic growth, Reaganomics, immigration, and economic inequality. Requirements for a grade: written final examination. The final exam will cover all topics discussed in class. For active participation: regular attendance of lectures and seminar presentations. All students are required to present one of the different seminar papers. Presentations should be 20 minutes long and outline the content of the article to be discussed. This includes identifying the research question, methodology, and findings. Presenters should be prepared to answer questions related to the reading. There are only limited places available. Attendance at the first session is required. Email and Blackboard will be the primary forms of communication for this course outside the classroom. Assignments, readings, and lecture notes will be posted on Blackboard.
