SoSe 19: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies: Gender, Sexuality and Culture: An Introduction to Queer Studies

The interdisciplinary field of Gender and Queer Studies critically examines the production and regulation of gender and sexuality. It explores the ways in which some forms and expressions of gender, sexuality and desire are institutionalized and legitimated while others are stigmatized, and argues that rather than private experiences or identities, sex, gender, and sexual orientation are profoundly political, public, and connected to larger structures of power. In this course students will develop a critical understanding of the historical and intellectual field of Gender Studies and Queer Theory through reading foundational texts, studying key terms and concepts, and engaging with recent and ongoing debates about issues such as gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, class, and embodiment. Students can expect to put theoretical material into dialogue with a diverse selection of materials from contemporary literature, politics and popular culture. This will range from political debates about topics such as migration and same-sex marriage to analyses of films such as Barry Jenkins’ Moonlight (2016) and episodes from Netflix’s recent revival of Queer Eye (2018). Alongside regular attendance and participation, requirements will include a term paper and short presentation. Schließen
