This course will focus on Romantic poetry against the background of contemporary cultural, political, and social movements. We shall question different approaches towards what is supposed to constitute Romanticism by widening the historical perspective both forward and backward. Rather than concentrating on 'big names' we shall try to understand different aspects through a topical approach. Since the term Romanticism is as controversial as the question which poets and poems belong into the canon of Romantic poetry, there are a number of anthologies with different selections of texts. For the purposes of this seminar, students should acquire the following one: The Penguin Book of Romantic Poetry, ed. Jonathan and Jessica Wordsworth. London, 2005 (Penguin Classics). Schließen
