Sönke Kunkel

Comments

This course introduces students to one of the most burgeoning fields in International, European, and U.S. History – the history of global aid. The course constitutes the first part of Module B and links up directly with the second course in this module. I therefore encourage all students wishing to complete the full module to register for both courses. The practice to help people in need in far-away places may seem to be a new feature of Western civil societies today, but has a history that stretches back at least some three-hundred years. Missionary societies and humanitarian networks started to engage in forms of relief already in the 17th and 18th centuries, so did new institutions such as the Red Cross or new religious actors like the YMCA in the 19th century. By the mid-twentieth century, notions of aid became increasingly entrenched in the new gospel of development. In this class, we will explore in a long-term perspective the shifting meanings and contexts that led European and American actors to give aid to people in need. A major emphasis will be on actors, their motivations, ideas, and policies. We will also discuss to what degree European and American practices of global aid were entangled and where they differed. Last, we will also engage in a substantial amount of reading on theoretical concepts and approaches. close
