SoSe 19: Holy Humanitarians? European and American Missionaries in the Age of Colonialism 18th to 19th Century

This seminar constitutes the second part (Hauptseminar) of Module B. Building on part one which is designed more as a general introduction to the history of global aid, this seminar focuses on a limited theme and is organized around individual/collective research projects. Working together in teams, students will explore and research a theme of their own choice at the intersection of colonialism and humanitarianism: How did humanitarianism and colonialism relate to each other? What kinds of aid practices did European and American humanitarian organizations pursue in the colonial word? What understandings and visions of ‘humanity’ shaped their policies? And what entanglements were there between European and American humanitarian organizations? Students will engage in extensive readings on their theme, do their own archival and primary source research, and write a paper. I therefore strongly advise students wishing to compose a full research paper (Hausarbeit) at the end of the term to sign up for this second part (Hauptseminar) of Module B.
