Comments

In this seminar we will consider the material culture of colonial Latin America from a global historical perspective. The trade and circulation of material objects between the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia played an important role in the development of the region’s societies and cultures. At the same time, historical developments in the region were shaped by the discovery and exploitation of exotic objects and raw materials. This seminar addresses this social and global life of things. For the period between the sixteenth and the nineteenth centuries, a variety of examples from recent literature are covered – from Mexican silver in China and Japanese biombos in Mexico to the creation of botanical collections in Colombia and the use of Peruvian guano around the world. The aim of the seminar is to introduce students to the use of objects as historical sources and their role in political negotiation and differentiation processes in a globalized world. close
