At the outset of Geoffrey Chaucer’s House of Fame, the dreamer-protagonist Geffrey articulates his frustration concerning his inability to determine the spiritual significance of dreams, including the dream vision he himself is about to tell. Geffrey’s predicament is somewhat understandable, given that late medieval dream visions raise very complex epistemological and poetological questions. After familiarizing ourselves with the sources and generic conventions of medieval dream visions, we shall read several late medieval insular dream visions with a view to how they model processes of cognition and relate the latter to spiritual and poetological questions. Among others, we will discuss Geoffrey Chaucer’s House of Fame and the prologue to the Legend of Good Women, John Lydgate’s Temple of Glass, James I of Scotland’s The Kingis Quair, Gavin Douglas’s The Palice of Honour, and John Skelton’s The Garland of Laurel. close
