SoSe 19: Contrastive Phonology: English - German

Renate Raffelsiefen

Comments

The phonology of spoken language concerns the question of how differences in meanings are distinguished through differences in sound. The potential in question can be described in terms of an inventory of smallest distinctive units (distinctive features, phonemes) and rules for combining these into syllables and words. In this course we will focus on vowels and compare the vowel inventories of English and German as well as systematic differences concerning the rules for organizing vowels in syllables in these two languages. We will also address the questions of how phonemic content is established in the first place and which role phonetic measurements play in phonological analysis. Participants should contact me by e-mail (raffelsiefen@ids-mannheim.de) for the reading material, to be read thoroughly by the beginning of the course. close
