Anna Islentyeva

Comments

Course Description:

This seminar introduces the empirical analysis of linguistic structures and functions at different levels, with emphasis on metaphor and metonymy. It employs corpus linguistics and other related observational methods.

In a major methodological shift in metaphor research, linguists have started analysing metaphorical patterns derived from naturally occurring language rather than relying on invented or isolated examples. Corpus-based studies can provide empirical support for the theoretical model, giving examples in a wider context. Language corpora are now employed to a systematic study of metaphors from a range of perspectives. This seminar focuses on two basic strands of corpus research: analysis of linguistic patterns and research into the use of metaphor in specific genres such as political, media, business and others.

The seminar is complemented by a lecture Levels of Linguistic Analysis I: Structures and Functions (on Wednesday from 10 till 12 a.m.) that provides the theoretical and psycho-linguistic background.

Course Requirements:

  • Regular attendance
  • Active participation: Oral presentation, participation in class activities, mid-term & final quizzes
