Media and Peripheries: national and transnational perspectives This course aims at critically reviewing theories and current issues in the media studies, by highlighting the asymmetries in media systems and media discourses, both in national and international settings. Peripheries are marginalized actors who are excluded from media production and media discourses. The course revisits core texts from critical theory to identify power mechanisms in the current media landscapes. This class aims at developing critical thinking and building alternative scientific knowledge by scrutinizing media and peripheries. The course also seeks to highlight knowledge from the Global South as well as to challenge Eurocentric paradigms and understand how they shape our discipline. Its ultimate goal is to build awareness for asymmetric modes of knowledge production in the field of media and communication studies. In class, the students connect the readings to our current issues and debates and scientifically work – through their presentations and/or term paper - to analyze how and where mainstream and peripheral views come from, and how to counter the dominant media narratives. Examples for topics in ‘media & peripheries’ are migration, terrorism, political economy, gender, etc. Students are welcome to suggest additional topics as well. The class builds on rigorous readings and active reflective discussions and methods. Very good skills in English language are required. Erasmus students not enrolled via Campus Management need to contact the instructor directly via email before the first session. close
