SoSe 20: All About Populism: Ideology, Media, Communication

Populism seems to be everywhere and it is clearly on the rise in Western Europe and beyond. This seminar is an introduction to key definitions, characteristics and interpretations of populism as ideology, mobilization strategy and as a specific form of political communication; its history, and how populism relates to media and communication. We will discuss populism by the media and through the media, the role of digital communication and social media platforms in the proliferation of populism, and whether populism is a danger for democracy. Requirements: active participation, ability and willingness to read scientific texts in English, oral presentation and seminar paper (3000 words, deadline: September 30, 2020).
