SoSe 20: Egypt in late antique Christian period - Copts in Egypt

Information for students
As far as possible, the seminar will take place in written and modular form. The central platform for information, materials, current announcements etc. is Blackboard. Please register there for this course so that all materials and announcements will be accessible to you.
You will receive various little tasks, which must be finished in written and/or oral form (e.g. via Cisco Webex or similar - still to be checked). The main focus lies on the interpretation and analysis of a historically relevant text source (this leads to the final term paper).
The tasks and dates will be announced on Blackboard and in an introductory email at the beginning of the course (April 22nd ). Please keep to these dates.
Disciplined work is expected to achieve the aim of the course. Since it is not possible to control regular participation under these circumstances, I will abstain from this. Active participation is proven by timely finishing the tasks required at regular intervals.

After centuries of Roman rule (with Rome as capital city), the beginning of Egypt's late antique period was particularly marked by the gradual collapse of the Roman Empire – after 395 CE Egypt belonged to the Eastern Roman Empire and was controlled from Constantinople – and by the triumph of Christianity along the Nile Valley. Initially marked by bloody persecutions, Christianity and especially monasticism sprang up, which was so characteristic for Egypt. The seminar will focus on the beginnings of monasticism and its famous monastic fathers (Pachomius, Shenoute), in particular, as well as on Coptic-Christian culture, art and architecture. close
