A long narrative tradition of otherworld trips culminates with Dante. In the seminar we will discuss a selection of accounts from the Antiquity and the Middle Ages. We will ask about the psychosomatic conditions and consequences of the trip, about space and time concepts according to different religious beliefs, and about the political or ethical aims that influence also the aestehtic of the texts. Besides, we will discuss their status as factual or fictional narratives. The texts will be accompanied by German or English translations. close
