Online Course ----- In this course we will cover the development and the variety of American religion from a sociological point of view starting with the turn to the 20th century. This includes the causal significance of Protestant belief for the genesis of capitalism – for which American examples have provided the most convincing evidence. The “Religious Right’s” influence on American politics will also be part of the course program. The response of American religion to the COVID-19 crisis will mark the most recent episode of its development. Introductory reading: Mark Chaves, American Religion.
