Structure of Modern English II: Prosody and morphology: English-German contrasts The seminar is about words with affixes in English and German. In both languages it can be shown that there are severe restrictions on the occurrence of vowels and consonants in affixes, which do not apply in stems. These restrictions are also relevant for the question of which words can grammaticalize and become affixes. The focus will be on the following questions:

  • (1) How does the phonological structure of affixes differ from the structure of stems?
  • (2) How are affixed words prosodically organized?
  • (3) How is affixation phonologically restricted?

  • The last point is about phenomena such as the restriction of English -ive-suffixation to stems ending in /t/ or /s/, the restriction of nominal -al-suffixation to stems with final stress, and so on. What determines those restrictions and why are they associated only with some affixes but not others?

Participants should contact me for the reading materials (raffelsiefen@ids-mannheim.de). It is necessary that you read the material carefully before the course starts. There will be a written exam at the end of the course. Schließen
