WiSe 12/13: V-Introduction to Cultural Studies I: An Introduction to British Cultural Studies

This lecture presents a general introduction to the field of British Cultural Studies. It sets off with a working definition of culture, arguably one of the most familiar keywords in the intellectual debate of our time. After coming to terms with what 'British' is supposed to mean and what it does not mean, the introduction will cover a wide range of topics, custom-tailored for students with a German cultural upbringing. A number of popular stereotypes concerning the British, the English etc. will be under review. The lecture will then discuss the dominant forces and institutions of the country against their historical background. Amongst others, special emphasis will be laid on the following topics: the monarchy, parliament, the commonwealth, the legal system, the welfare state, the class structure, gender roles, immigration and ethnic minorities, the north-south divide, education and higher education, and the media. Recent developments and current events will be illustrated by referring to selected expository and literary texts.
