WiSe 12/13: S-Introduction to Cultural Studies II: Literature and Migration: Writing/Reading the figure of the Migrant

Comments

Travellers, foreigners, immigrants, refugees, exiles, deportees, stateless, displaced persons - today in many parts of the world - they are considered as aliens. From somewhere else. At home nowhere. They come in throngs and we give them a number of names. But who are they in reality? Where are they going? And why do nations unleash such cruel wars to stop them? In this course we will examine ethical and philosophical issues such as human rights, hospitality, cosmopolitanism, and postcolonial justice in relation to a range of literary, cinematic and biographical texts, all of which in various ways depict the experience of migration. We will analyse the crossings and hybridizations of language and culture as a result of migration, the creolization of languages and artforms, as well as the Deleuzian ideas of the Rhizome and Minor Literature. The course will be taught in English, a level B1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)is suggested but not obligatory.

Set Texts: A selection of key texts and recommended readings and films will be uploaded on Blackboard, before the beginning of the course and updated during the same.

Assessment: one 2000-words essay due after the end of semester. close
